A Tale of Two Notes

This morning local time, President Trump visited Yad Vashem, Israel’s memorial to the Holocaust. The memorial is dedicated to preserving the memory of the dead; honoring Jews who fought against their Nazi oppressors and Gentiles who aided Jews in need; and researching the phenomenon of the Holocaust in particular and genocide in general, with the aim of avoiding such events in the future.

Barack Obama visited the site in 2008 and left this well thought out note in its guestbook.

It reads:

I am grateful to Yad Vashem and all of those responsible for this remarkable institution. At a time of great peril and promise, war and strife, we are blessed to have such a powerful reminder of man’s potential for great evil, but also our capacity to rise up from tragedy and remake our world. Let our children come here, and know this history, so that they can add their voices to proclaim ‘never again.’ And may we remember those who perished, not only as victims, but also as individuals who hoped and loved and dreamed like us, and who have become symbols of the human spirit.

It is a poetic message from a serious man that recognizes the somber spirit of the memorial.

The current president also left a note in the guestbook.

It reads:

It is a great honor to be here with all of my friends – So amazing & will Never Forget!

That is the message our president left at the Israeli memorial built to honor and remember six million people who lost their lives to the atrocities of the Holocaust. Donald Trump is either a third grader or a total doofus. His note might as well have been written in crayon followed by a bunch of emojis.
